W Wallace of the 1st
Border Regiment was a regular soldier who was a patient at Hickwells in 1915. His
entry in Nurse Oliver’s album reads:
W Wallace
1st Bn Border Regt
Shoeburyness
India 1910
Home 1915
He shares this page in the album
with entries from 19740 Private Joseph Leigh of the 3rd Border Regiment, 5363 Private W Ferguson of the 3rd Border Regiment and 50082
Driver James Gilbert of the Royal Field Artillery.
The 1st Border Regiment
sailed from Bombay on 9th December 1914 and arrived at Avonmouth
on 10th January 1915 where it became part of the 87th Brigade in the regular 29th
Division. On 17th March 1915 the battalion
sailed from Avonmouth and arrived at Alexandria on 28th March before moving on to Mudros and then to Gallipoli.
Exactly why W Wallace was at Hickwells
and when in 1915 he was there, is unclear although he was possibly a Gallipoli casualty.
He is possibly 9437 Private William
Thomas Wallace.
