Ernest Pateman was born at Chailey in 1890; his birth registered at Lewes in the June quarter
of that year. He was the youngest child of Charles and Susannah Pateman of Chailey.
His name appears in a special list of attested men published in Chailey Parish Magazine
in January, March and April 1916. Next to his name, the words, “medically
unfit” are written and it appears that he did not serve during the First World War.
Ernest Pateman had three older brothers – Charles, Alfred and Thomas - all of whom served during the First World War and whose stories can be accessed by clicking on their names. His cousins Percy and Walter Pateman also served their King and Country during the Great War.
