William Holt did not date his entry in Nurse Oliver’s album or give any indication of where he had been wounded. Indeed, he may have been at Hickwells or Beechlands as a result of sickness as I have
not been able to find a medal index card for him. His entry, sharing the page
with entries from L Reed and 86771 Private Thomas S Benton of the Royal Engineers, reads:
Fading away like the Stars of the Morning
Loosing their light in its glorious dawn
Thus shall we pass from this earth and its mourning
Only remembered by what we have done
A good deed brings its own Reward

The 1/20th London Regiment (Blackheath and Woolwich) was a Territorial Force Battalion originating in Blackheath,
south east London. It
formed part of the 5th London Brigade in the 2nd London Division and later went on to form part of the 141st Brigade in the
47th (London) Division.
It seems likely from the address that Private Holt gives that the 20th Londons was his local battalion.
Nothing else is known about this man or his service.
