Chailey Parish Magazine
notes in October 1915 that Pte A V Martin is serving with the 2nd Royal Sussex Regiment in England. The following
month it notes that he is in France. In April 1917, the magazine notes that he has been appointed lance-corporal
and has also been wounded. This information is then repeated up to and including September 1917, after
which there is no further reference to this man. A V Martin is probably Albert Victor Martin who was born at Woodmancote, Sussex in 1887.He appears on the 1901 census of England and Wales living in Ashington, Sussex. There is one medal index card for an A V Martin with
Royal Sussex Regiment connections and that is the card for L/10421 Albert V Martin. No battalion is indicated on the
card but the number falls within the sequence issued to men enlisting with the Royal Sussex Regiment during the First World
War under regular terms of enlistment. We
can also pinpoint the date that this man joined the Royal Sussex Regiment to between the 7th and 19th August 1914. The
medal card for this man indicates that he first arrived overseas on 7th April 1915. Sources and Acknowledgements
